Skynet is getting a reboot. The new TERMINATOR film, billed as TERMINATOR 5, is actually a reboot, the first film in a planned trilogy by Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures.
That first movie is coming June 26th, 2015, and the news that this is a reboot actually meshes with previous news we uncovered on the story. Here’s what I wrote at the time:
All of this is largely rumor, but it appears that there is a version of the script being specifically tailored to Dwayne Johnson, who would play one of the infernal robotic killers. There’s also a lot of new info on what the plot might look like. Apparently, T5 may be a prequel set in the time of Sarah Connor’s parents, when Terminators go back even further to take care of their mission.
Another theory is that Schwarzenegger may not be playing the Terminator in the film, but a heroic human aiding the Connor family, and that his ability to protect them inspires the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that then was sent to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor.
Laeta Kalorgridis and Patrick Lussier are writing the screenplay. It seems that the prequel would posit some role reversal, with Arnold the human hero, fighting against Dwayne Johnson’s Terminator, if that casting comes to fruition. Crazy stuff.
